Are you embarrassed to smile because of discolored teeth? Have you ever wondered what can be done to keep or get your teeth to be their whitest? Here are a few tips sure to keep you smiling.

1. Eat right to stay bright.
Tooth enamel is porous and absorbs color from foods. Go easy with coffee, tea, cola, red wine, soy sauce, and dark juices like grape, blueberry and cranberry.

2. Quit all tobacco.
All smoking and chewing tobacco yellows teeth.

3. Brush up daily.
Brush twice daily for two minutes and floss once a day to remove plaque. Use a whitening toothpaste once or twice a week to remove surface stains.

4. Whitening is safe.
Under the supervision of a dentist, for most people whitening is the safest cosmetic dental procedure. Some procedures are not recommended for children under 15 years of age, pregnant or lactating women, and people with some gum problems.

5. Talk to your dentist.
A dentist’s supervision ensures proper whitening results, according to the Academy of General Dentistry. Not everyone is a candidate for power bleaching.

6. Know your options.
Different procedures produce different results. Dentist-supervised procedures are successful 90 percent of the time. Surveys have found that over-the-counter whiteners did not whiten teeth as much as in-office systems.

7. Decide which procedure is best for you.
Convenience varies. Whitening may be done in one hour or may take a few hours daily for two weeks to one month. Each system requires something different from you and you need to decide if you’re up to the task.

8. Go for the best shade.
With a color chart, your dentist will help you decide how many shades whiter you want your teeth. People’s teeth brighten at different rates. Depending on the procedure you choose, your teeth will probably brighten between 2 to 10 shades.

9. Whitest and brightest.
In-office whitening systems are the fastest and most effective. A light-activated gel is applied for one hour, and teeth tend to become 6 to 10 shades whiter.

10. Stay on the white path.
With all the whitening systems flooding the market, ask us about the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. To earn the seal, manufacturers must undergo stringent testing for safety and effectiveness.
